CMenuExtender is a shell extension that lets the user add
items to the Explorer contextmenu. Using any registry-editor
or the supplied GUI, the user can add submenus and items such
as shortcuts to programs, documents, folders, webpages and
scripts. CMExt also has some predefined commands for copying,
moving and retrieving information on files and directories.

Since it has been over a year since we last wrote something
here, we thought it was about time to make a little update.
We are recieving input from users every now and then, to
spark new ideas about where to take the project for the next
release. All such input and suggestions are very welcome and
very interesting. We have several new features that we plan
to implement for the next release, as well as some bugfixes
and corrections. These features should hopefully fit
seamlessly into the users current setup, using the XML-ish
type of configuration we introduced previously.
The source code and other parts of the project has been
shared with other developers on several occasions during the
past year. We hope that our work on CMExt has been helpful
to these developers, helping them to make good
software. Even though we have let some selected developers
take part of the source, we have no plans at the moment to
release CMExt as open source. Possibly the 1.2-tree could be
released when 1.3 has been established.
One of the things that has been holding the project back for
a while has been the technical part. The technical part
involves making CMExt work on all Windows versions, making
it look good, making it consistent and "forward
compatible". Even though Microsoft are pouring out new
versions and service packs at a hysterical rate, this
process has been going quite well, and had it not been for
some hardware problems, a new version could have been
realized by now.
So to conclude, we have a lot in store for the 1.3 series of
CMExt and we are well on our way. As usual the development
is on an ad hoc basis, and there is no telling when a new
version could come out, but we have our aims set for
sometime around the end of the year.

By releasing v 1.2.1.2 (still called cmext121.zip), we end
the development of the 1.2.* series. By adding some more options to
the move- and copycommands, we think that 1.2.* is as good
as it'll get. The next release will (hopefully) be a beta
from the 1.3.* series, with some of the features in the
TODO-list. There's no telling when it will be done, but if
you want to know about it you can sign up for the
Newsletter.
At this point, we also want to thank all the users who have
sent us bugreports and suggestions for 1.2.*, and hope that
you will continue to do so for 1.3.* in the future.

We fixed the problem and now release v 1.2.1.1. Don't care to
much about the version numbering, we're not sure we
understand it either. :) The file is still called cmext121.zip
and is found on the download-page.

Oh, darn... Seems like we messed up. An user reported that
CMExt doesn't work when trying to copy or move to a browsed
folder. And he's right. It doesn't. We had forgotten to
change four appearances of "commandLine" to "dest" in the
sourcecode. A small mistake, but since we've had some
publicity lately it's quite embarrassing. We should have
tested the software better before we released it to
simtel.net, and we apologize. We'll release a fix for it
ASAP, but right now we're gonna mope and throw some blame
around our beta-testers.

The planning of features for the next version begins. Some
new ideas are added to the TODO-list. Now when we have a nice
registryformat, and a modular structure, we can concentrate
on adding nice commands and functions to make CMExt more
versatile and useful.

There, finally. The new version is out and has loads of
improvements compared to previous versions. Find it on the
downloadpage. And then send us suggestions on what to do next.

Everything seems to work fine, so when the new manual for
CMExtEd is done, the new release will be sent to the various
archives on the internet. No further features will be added
to this version.

The new version goes to beta-testing. It can be found here.

The extension is more or less done, and now the efforts are
aimed at the editor. The GUI has a new appearance again, and
is even more compact than the one currently available. The
new registry format is very handy to edit with Regedit, so
most should be able to handle it even without a GUI. Some
more work on the editor and the beta-testing can
begin. Anyone interested in participating in the testing can
send a little mail to us. No pay, no benefits, no drawbacks.

After having spent weeks just looking at the sorry mess that
constitutes the sourcecode for CMenuExtender, sighing heavily
and time after time giving up on sorting it out, we decided
to rewrite the whole thing from scratch. The first snippets
of code for CMenuExtender has been patched over and over
again as new functionality has been added. Therefore the code
is now so messy that none of us can sort it out. That's the
drawback of not setting up clear goals before starting the
projects. But in our belief, organization hamper creativity... :)

The TODO-list is added. Now everybody in the whole wide world
can see how little that actually gets done on CMExt.

The new, much improved, version of CMExt is out! This version
has been charged with more functions and a quite nice
editor. Installing has been made much easier and the
documentation has been rewritten.
The next version will probably have more predefined commands
and some other features that we'll think of along the
way. We will also rewrite parts of CMExt to improve the
NT-performance. Suggestions on how to improve CMExt is much
appreciated.
2001 Jan 29
The upcoming version of CMExt will have
support for operating on files and directories. Some new
functions has been added and some has changed a bit. Most
of the predefined commands supports multiselection. There
are some changes in presentation of the menuitems, for
instance shortcuts to programs, which will be grayed since
most programs can't make sense of having several files given
as argument. The GUI has been rewritten and has a nicer
appearance. It also works "behind the scenes" by installing
the COM-server and handling updates. There is also a new
manual in HTML-format that will be a bit more helpful than
the old text-documents. The registry-format
remains unchanged, so settings made with v1.1 will work without
any changes. Some download sites has listed CMExt as working
on NT/2000, which is true only to a limited extent. CMExt
should work, but not all functions in CMExtEd.
